Jon has been searching for something as long as I've known him. There isn't anything he really likes to do. We tried Little League, wrestling and football. He loses interest, sports are hard. It takes practice and conditioning. He doesn't feel like it's worth the effort to play. That's a shame. He treats school the same way. He's bright enough to get good grades but getting him to put forth an effort is an uphill battle. We have been hounding Jon to do homework, pay attention in class and put his best foot forward since Kindergarten. We will probably have to until he graduates. My hope is that someday he finds something that grabs him, something he feels is worth the effort. I don't think he's that different from other kids his age except he got a double dose of stubborn.
Below is a short skit from his Creative Dramatics class. He got an A in that class. I asked him how he got that grade and he told me it was easy. Is this something he likes? I enjoyed watching him and have told him over and over I'm proud of him.
I've always thought being a parent is hard, being the parent of a pissy, hormone driven teenager is really hard. Still, compared to some of the stories I hear from my friends, Jon is a model citizen. Keep prodding, pushing and guiding. One foot in front of the other. The gem below is what I hope will be the first of many. I think he's going to be just fine.
