You can't always get what you want

The moment is frozen in time for me. Five years ago today I felt my son's heart stop beating. It was a bittersweet moment. Michael's passing wasn't unexpected. To say the pregnancy had complications would be a huge understatement. We were told his life would be short and we made the choices we made without regret. Although we tried to focus on celebrating his life instead of mourning our loss it was still a low point in our life. Most of my friends and family rushed to my side. Noboby opened their arms wider than Jon. He was hurting too but his grief was on a different level. He kept us focused and gave us strength. That is a great burden for a kindergartener to carry, we never asked him to carry it, he just picked it up. For a few days we were pretty useless as parents and he responded by being on his best behavior. The three of us weathered that storm and most of those wounds have healed. They say everything happens for a reason. The reasons are still not clear to me but I can tell you it pulled us closer and strengthened our family bond. It also made me understand how fragile life is and that it should never be taken for granted. I think about that every single day. No you can't always get what you want, but if you try sometime, you just might find, you get what you need.

Something similar happened to my mom back before she had Cody. It was an odd time for our family. I remember not knowing if I should be sad or not. I think Julie and I just kept low profiles for a few days like J.
