Lay your weary head to rest

Today Kevin rallied from septic shock and seemed to be on the mend. He was still having a hard time breathing. The doctor found he was suffering from pneumothorax, probably brought on by aggressive use of the ventilator to keep him breathing. While they were treating his collapsed lung his heart stopped beating. Tina and I watched the doctors do chest compressions to keep blood flowing through his body while they tried to get his heart beating on it's own. I don't know how long they tried to revive him, time slowed for us. At one point, I counted 17 people working to keep our son alive. Finally one of the doctors told us there was nothing more they could do for him. They took all the tubes and wires off Kevin and gave him to his mother. He was in her arms, surrounded by her love when he passed on at 1:04 PM. He never gave up and fought the good fight all the way.

We are grateful to the staff of DeVos Children's Hospital for their efforts. We are also thankful for the family and friends who have supported us through this difficult time. Our hearts are heavy and we try to remember how blessed we are to have had the time we got to spend with Kevin. He will live forever in our hearts. We smile when we picture him playing now with his older brother Michael.

Up late thinking of all of you...I'm so sorry you all have had to go through the kind of agony that many of us will never know. Life has made your journey a rough one, but you also have two wonderful children and somehow this will make your family even stronger. My prayers go out to you. Call me if I can help with anything. Love, Teletha

My heart is heavy for you, my brother, and I share your joy with the reality of him joining Michael. I have no words for you that could bring healing from the pain, I am afraid. So my conversation will be with God, with you and yours in my mind and on my lips.
